Pre-game Notes
A few things to remember early in the game:
1. You have to buy secrets from the locals. You do this by tributing gold (use the F6 hotkey to bring up the tribute screen) to player 4 - this will be the only player you will be able to tribute to. Holding down the shift key while tributing increases the lot size to 500. There is a cost of approximately 11% to tribute so for every 100 gold you send the total cost will be 111.
2. You will receive chats from other players and it is a good idea to pause the game to insure you don't miss the messages.
3. You will discover and buy scrolls throughout the game which bear valuable information. Whenever a scroll appears all player's diplomacy will be automatically set to neutral for the display duration of each scroll.
4. Some units and technologies are forbidden for Player 1 during the first part of the game: factory, galleon, plantations, spies and church mercantilism. Once you defend the wonder you get plantations.
5. Many units have been modified to improve game play including: gold mines yield 2500 coin, native villagers gather very slowly, war canoe hit points and attack increased, and the British rockets have a vast range (140 meters).
6. There are two forbidden zones: the Rhea nesting grounds and the island of Tehechee. Morgan can go to both locations but any other Player 1 units will be instantly killed if they go there. Note that the white buffalo can go to Tehechee and ships can approach the island without any harm.
7. Gold is scarce on the map until late game and you’ll have to fight for gold piles. You can easily harvest a lot of food and wood though and trade for gold. Keep an eye out for gold treasures and choosing certain age paths will reward you with chests of coin also. Use them all to supplement your coin income.
8.Save often in case you loose the game pre-maturely F8 and F9 are the quick save and quick load hotkeys respectively.
Also note the level has full difficulty support so the Natives and British are upgraded depending on what difficulty the player sets. The level defaults to moderate but can be changed by opening the scenario in the editor, clicking “playtest scenario”, setting the difficulty level to whatever, then click “cancel” then save the scenario. You can now go into the main menu and select “single player/custom scenario/The Trials to start the game under the new difficulty setting.
